Notes
The trail starts at the western edge of the Sam Houston National Forest. Spring’s morning mist shrouds the trees and glistens the ferns around our feet.
Everywhere you look the forest is alive and growing from the heat and moisture lingering in the air.
Even the trail comes alive with roots for stairs and natural tunnels made from the brush.
My hiking buddy, Nico. I dubbed his trail name “Sherpa” because of the massive pack he carried full of gallons of water and extra snacks.
After a few miles the trail enters a wilderness dominated by palmettos, a signature of Texas’ wetlands.
Small bridges made of planks offered some relief from the swamp.
In the end we couldn’t escape walking through the marsh without tracking through mud and water to get to our campsite.
